Meet the Physicians  

Southern Michigan Pain Consultant's physicians are anesthesiologists who have trained specifically in Pain Management and/or Pain Medicine. Our physicians work with the patient to find the best methos to reduce pain by using a variety of treatments to comprise a comprehensive pain management program.

Matthew Kuiper, DO, is Board Certified in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He became Medical Director upon Dr. Charles Guernsey's retirement. He completed his undergraduate studies at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. He attended Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and he completed his residency in Anesthesia at the University of Florida, Gainesville. Dr. Kuiper has also participated in an Interventional Pain Management Fellowship at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. While he was in fellowship participated in the research of multiple investigations on new therapies in the treatment of pain and novel intraspinal medicines for the management of pain. Dr. Kuiper has broad experience in spinal cord stimulation, intrathecal pump management and pain management in the back and neck. He is also experienced in the treatment of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Dr. Kuiper is available at SMPC's Portage & St. Joseph offices.

Andrew Alshab, MD MPH, is practicing at SMPC’s Marshall & Portage Pain Management Centers. Dr. Alshab completed his undergraduate studies & Master of Public Health at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He obtained his medical degree from Wayne State School of Medicine, Detroit, Michigan and went on to complete a residency in Anesthesiology as well as an Anesthesia Pain Fellowship at Case Western Reserve University through University Hospitals of Cleveland, Ohio. His interests include low back pain, discogenic pain, CRPS and spinal cord stimulation. He works with his patients to develop a comprehensive pain management plan in order to decrease pain and improve functionality.




Barton Wild MD, completed a BS degree in Chemistry from Indiana University in Bloomington. In addition, he attended the Illinois Institute of Technology while continuing his education in Chemical Engineering. After working in that field for a short time Dr. Wild attended Wayne State University in Detroit earning his Doctor of Medicine. Since that time he has completed his Surgery Internship at the Detroit Medical Center, his Anesthesia Residency and his Fellowship in Chronic Pain Management at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Dr. Wild will be available at all three of SMPC's locations.
